Curriculum

“Take My Word For It!” leads students on word expeditions, encouraging them to delve into their imaginations using fun, hands-on, and innovative creative writing activities.

Our after-school enrichment programs feature a different curriculum for each session of the school year: fall, winter, and spring. All of our writing activities encourage kids to think of themselves as authors and to try their hand at everything from metaphors to odes.

Community based programs include the ever-popular, “Peanut Butter and the Pen,” a food writing workshop where kids use all of their senses and plates full of adjectives to describe food. We also run a Young Writers Lab for more experienced writers in 4th through 8th grade. The Lab is a place for young authors to work on their own pieces as well as explore different ways to ignite their imaginations.

We’ve also partnered with the nationally renowned NaNoWriMo to present their novel writing curriculum.  NaNoWriMo’s fun, seat-of-your-pants creative writing challenge invites kids to take on the process of writing a novel. They determine their own word-count goal and along the way learn about character development, plot, setting, dialogue and the like. The ultimate goal - completing and editing their own original tale and also accomplishing a major feat they can crow about!

“Take My Word For It!” offers unique and ever-changing ways for kids to play with words, and encourages enthusiastic and reluctant writers alike to come explore their talents in a safe, supportive environment. We consider ourselves a word incubator – a place where kids’ ideas can be kept warm until they’re ready to hatch.
