All of the 5th grade students in our Sloat Elementary Poetry Residency wrote poems inspired by Maya Angelou's piece, "Life Doesn't Frighten Me at All". Poets Alexandra, Samantha and Ada confronted their fears in these three pieces.

Every Wednesday our creative writing prompt encourages you to take up your pen and indulge your author self!
Sunday is Mother's Day. How about taking some time to write something special for your mom? Here are some ideas:
Write an acrostic poem using the word M-O-T-H-E-R.
Write a thank you letter to your mom expressing your gratitude for all the things she does for you.
Write about a favorite or funny memory of your mother.
Finish this sentence in as many ways as you can think of: "My mother is a great Mom because…". Try using a different adjective each time: "My mother is a fabulous mom because …; "My mother is a one-of-a-kind Mom because…;" "My mother is a spectacular Mom because…."
Imagine that you and your mom switched places and suddenly you became her Mom for a Day. What would that be like? Write about a day in her shoes.
Our goal is to establish a community of young writers who respect one another and feel safe sharing their work with the group. On the first day of class we collaborate to come up with a set of guidelines we all agree to follow during out time together. That's followed by a writing activity that helps us get to know one another better. Then we introduce the curriculum and dive into our imaginations!
No, unless a student wants to continue working on a story on his/her own.
Yes! We offer summer and holiday On Demand Camps. Submit an interest form here. (We have been doing camps through the Bay Area for years!)
Absolutely not! We pride ourselves on converting reluctant writers into enthusiastic ones and strive to meet children where they are with creative expression. We call ourselves a "word Incubator" - a place where kids ideas can be kept safe until they're ready to hatch.
