Every Wednesday this summer our creative writing prompt encourages you to take up your pen and write in your journal. So go ahead, indulge your author self!
For today's journal entry look outside your window for writing inspiration. Use lots of sensory details to craft a paragraph or poem about the weather outside. What's going on outside your window right now? Is the sun blazing, are there big puffy clouds, is it windy or foggy or do you need an umbrella? Does the weather where you are make you happy and want to be outside? If not, what's the weather like somewhere you wish you could be?

To start off your summer journal, write a paragraph or poem about what you are most looking forward to doing this summer. Is there a special trip your family plans on taking? Are you looking forward to a "stay-cation" at home? Do you have special activities planned? Use as many sensory details as possible to describe your ideal summer vacation and all the fun and good times ahead.

It's Why Not Write Wednesday and this summer we have a challenge for you: Create a Summer Journal!
We'll be posting a writing prompt each Wednesday this summer to inspire you to keep writing. Make yourself a journal and write about your absolute favorite summer trips, draw pictures of places and people, save ticket stubs, press in leaves and flowers - you get the idea! By the end of the summer you will have a great keepsake.
For this week, work on finding a journal and creating a special cover. You can repurpose a school notebook, buy a new journal or use your booking making skills to handcraft a journal. Whichever route you choose, add some cover art, create a title page and make your journal your own.

At Orinda's Wagner Ranch Elementary this spring, our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders used writing to explore the many aspects of flight, including the flight of bees, of Amelia Earhart and her plane, of Cupid’s arrow, and more.
Students were given the prompt "My Name Is..."
My name is the sound of running.
My name is made from the roar of a lion.
My name can be on the cover of a book.
If I lost my name I would name myself again.
-Elsa
My happiness is my name.
My name is made from the joy of other people.
My name can bring me joy.
My name means special.
-Naisha
Students used personification to think from the perspective of a bumblebee
The Map!
O.k. now let’s see, which path I should choose: the right one or the left one. Oh no! I forgot my annoying older brother must’ve taken my map while I was searching for nectar. Just in case, I am going to look in my backpack to make sure it is not hiding anywhere. OMG, I think I found it. Oh, wait, that’s not a map, that is just an old leaf. Boo.
-Abby
The Big Day
I woke up on the big day! I was so scared, I was going to compete against the fastest bee in the hive, plus I was in the biggest event in the year. “Bellabee!” Mom called. “It’s time to get ready!”
-Isabella
“Little does Speedbee know, he’s being lured into a trap! He starts panting and we take a break on a tree. The, wooooshh, my whole family is cheering me on and the end comes. At the end of the race, I win! Two months later, my waiter is Speedbee and all is well.”
-John
Students wrote a list of things that take flight, then chose one to write as a poem or story.
Poem (About Pegasus)
All of the bright colors
Are mixed into one
The beautiful thing flies
Magically with grace
-Alison
Students read the Cupid and Psyche myth & then wrote variations of their own and what happens when temptation & curiosity gets the better of one!
Cupid with a Twist
Instead of wings, he has a jet pack…also he has a Harry Potter wand.
-Nithan
What happened?
What happened to me was I was told not to look at my present. I did and it was the thing I really wanted but I got caught and didn’t get it. I learned to follow orders. So I ended up with a different but awesome day. But I still learned to never stop obeying your parents. I also learned that vanilla cake is yummy!

Today's prompt: Write a letter to the kid who will be sitting in your seat next year. Do you remember feeling nervous at the beginning of the school year? Maybe you feel comfortable and happy in your class now but are a little nervous about what your teacher and classroom will be like next year? One way to feel better is to pay it forward to the student who will be in your current class in the fall.
In your letter, share some expert tips about what your teacher likes, the coolest thing you learned, the most fun field trips the student will take and which desk is the best. Describe your favorite parts of the past year and let him/her know what to look forward to in the coming year. Maybe you will be lucky and someone will write you the same letter. Most of all, send good luck and remember, new beginnings can be funI
Share with us! Post your writing in the comments section of our blog! Better yet, share your letter with your teacher so they can pass it on.
