Here's one to try:
Find an interesting article in a newspaper or magazine. Who are the characters? What is the setting? What is the main story?
Now, take all of these elements and expand them into a new story! What happens next? Don't forget the major questions a journalist always asks: Who? What? Where? When? and Why?
